The Green Mountain Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, assisted by men from Phoenix House, and teens from Ripple, collected 90 bikes and 4 sewing machines for the developing world on Saturday, September 17, 2011.

We're planning our next one day used bike collection for September, 2012.

Your bike will become dependable, affordable transportation fort a struggling family in Africa, Central America, Eastern Europe or Southeast Asia. Access to work and school is a key to escaping poverty.

Is there a neglected bike gathering dust in your garage? When you donate your bike and $10 for shipping, it will become affordable transportation to school or work for a struggling family in Africa, Central America, Eastern Europe or Southeast Asia. A bike helps farmers get their crop to markets; gets students to distant schools, and allows health care workers to spend more time with patients and less time walking between villages. A receipt will be provided for the total value of this tax deductible contribution.

No bike to donate? You can help by spreading the word about this event to family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, and school via email or poster. We depend on word of mouth outreach. You can also help by making a donation of any amount to help cover shipping costs.

*Why Do You Ask for A $10 Donation With Each Bike?

On average, it costs about $36 to ship a bike or sewing machine to parners in Central and South America, Africa, and Eastern Europe. We've decided to ask each person donating to make a contribution toward this cost to help cut down on the fundraising we have to do.

When you donate your old bike or sewing machine, its because you want to see it get to someone who will treasure it for years to come. Isn't it worth $10 to help make sure that happens? And at the same time you're getting space in your garage or closet, and a tax deduction.

Pedals for Progress has partner organizations in Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. The bikes are provided to students, farmers, low-wage workers and health educators. With a bike, people can spend more time working, studying, or serving their community -- and less time walking from place to place.

Affordable, repairable transportation can make a huge difference in the lives of poor people. It is not unusual for a maid in Dominican Republic to spend 1/4 of her day's pay on a slow, crowded bus. With a bike, she can get to work faster - which gives her more hours to work for pay, and lets her put the money she was spending on bus fare toward educating her children, starting a small business, or just eating more nutritiously.

With a bike, a farmer or craftswoman can get their goods to markets that are too far to reach on foot, improving their ability to make a living. A bike can also become the basis of a small business - such as a delivery service, a pedal cab, or a food vending cart.

*Donate Your Sewing Machine

Many families have an older sewing machine tucked away in the back of a closet. It may have belonged to a mother or an aunt, and it may work perfectly well -- but nobody seems to want a 30 year old sewing machine.

When you donate this sewing machine - plus $10 for shipping - to Pedals for Progress, it will provide employment for someone in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Jamaica, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Moldova or Kyrgystan.

Please be sure to include all attachments and instruction booklets with the machine.

Used Bike Collection - Saturday September 17, 2011

The Green Mountain Returned Peace Corps Volunteers will be collecting used bicycles for developing countries on Saturday, September 17, 2011 from 9 AM til 1 PM at the Burlington Electric Department at 585 Pine Street in Burlington. This collection is a one day only event.

We ask for a $10 donation with each bike, to help cover the expense of shipping bikes overseas.

The bikes are sent to carefully selected partner organizations in Latin America, Africa, and Eastern Europe. First the bikes are repaired by members of the community as part of a job skills training program. Then the bikes are distributed to students, farmers, low-wage workers, health educators, and others who need affordable transportation.
